Who is affected
Anyone running RDS for PostgreSQL 13 instances or clusters. Community PostgreSQL 13 no longer gets new releases, so AWS ships its own patches for 13 under Extended Support.
What happens at end of life
RDS enrols 13 databases in Extended Support and charges for it from the day after standard support ends. Charges stop when you upgrade to a version under standard support or delete the database.
Migration options
Upgrade to PostgreSQL 17 or 18 on RDS
Pick a target with a long runway. AWS lists standard support for 17 until February 28, 2030 and for 18 until February 28, 2031. Test extensions and application drivers on a snapshot restore first.
Upgrade to PostgreSQL 16
Standard support runs to February 28, 2029. A reasonable step if an extension or driver is not ready for 17 yet.
