Amazon Linux 2 reached end of support on June 30, 2026. It no longer receives standard security updates.

- Vendor: AWS
- Category: Operating system
- Last verified: 2026-11-01

## Key dates

- June 30, 2026: Amazon Linux 2 end of support (exact date)

## Who is affected

Teams running EC2 instances, container hosts, AMIs, golden images or on-premises VMs built on Amazon Linux 2.

## What happens

AWS says AL2 is no longer receiving standard security updates and that staying on it carries increasing risk as new vulnerabilities go unpatched. AWS does not offer paid support for on-premises AL2 VMs.

## Migration options

- Amazon Linux 2023 (AL2023): AWS recommends migrating now. AL2023 is supported until June 2029. Expect changes in the package manager, default configuration and some package names, so test your images and automation.
- Another supported Linux distribution: A fit if you also run non-AWS servers and want one OS standard. Rebuild your AMIs, configuration management and monitoring agents.
